Initiatives are the passion driven projects that Iowa BIG North students take leadership of.  Each initiative starts as an inbound or outbound problem.  Inbound problems come from community partners, and outbound problems come from students in the program.  The students choose initiatives they’re passionate about and work with community partners and other Iowa BIG North members to evaluate the problem and find a solution.

Credit Score

Inbound

Credit Score is an initiative that is working towards letting teens and young adults know about the importance of a credit score.  The team is planning a one day activity for all seniors to attend. The seniors will be given a fake life which includes a career, kids, and pets. They will then go out into this community for the day and buy a house, a car, apply for loans, and buy insurance. After the students do those things, they must buy groceries according to the amount of people in their family. They also can go to other stores and buy items they think they need to support themselves and their family.

Croell Construction Calculator

Inbound

Croell linked up with Iowa BIG North to create a mobile solution for contractors and homeowners for construction. The objective of this initiative is to expand on the company’s online construction calculator and make it accessible for use through the Apple App Store, Google Play, and other mobile app stores.  The current online construction calculator calculates how much concrete you need for slabs, columns, footings, and walls.  The team members in this initiative seek to go beyond just that.

Exercise Your Way

Outbound

Exercise Your Way was developed when a student was wanting to take classes, but a Physical Education credit was limiting their opportunities.  What if students could get their PE credit outside of school, and yet take all of the classes they might want or need?  Students in this group are working together to try and come up with alternative opportunities for a PE credit, and stay within the standards.  It would be beneficial for students because they could add more classes to their schedule and be more active outside of school.

Marketing IBN

Outbound

Marketing Iowa BIG North is an outbound initiative. The problem that the team is looking to solve is how people do not know about Iowa BIG and what the students in it are doing. Members of this initiative are working on solving just that by educating people in the communities and other students on what BIG is.  The students helping with this initiative are able to practice and improve skills that are used in everyday life.  Examples are public speaking by giving presentations, professional writing with letters and more, and many other skills.  Members are working on getting the program to grow bigger and better for the future.
